How quickly time flies. Tempus Fugit. These past ten weeks have passed so fast. It is the 11th April already and when we return, the first Week of Term Two, it will be almost May. Do not be surprised if you see the Christmas decorations soon.
However, we must not let the season of Easter pass without recognition. In the southern hemisphere it is somewhat difficult at Easter time to comprehend the sense of anticipation, hope and new life that one does in the northern hemisphere where days are getting longer, spring is in abundance, and the long summer holidays are temptingly close. In Australia, Easter comes as days are shorter and the trees more barren, not the sign of new life as in the northern hemisphere. This is an experience similarly shared with many religious traditions such as Judaism, Hinduism and Islam where our southern season does not always reflect the symbolism of the festival with its origin in the northern hemisphere.
The Lenten journey concludes with hope and new life expressed in Easter Week. The message of Easter is that having reflected on our suffering, disappointment, loss or diminishment during Lent we learn that we can and do live in hope for change and betterment and that we also depend on others to do so. We are not in this alone. In an age where we are charged with ensuring happiness and avoiding pain, grief, suffering, disappointment, loss or diminishment we are missing the opportunity to reflect and grow.
Our young people need the gift of hope, but they also need to realise it occurs through acknowledging some form of loss, or struggle, or disappointment. We all need help to gain the resilience required to live fully this hope. We need each other; we need strong supportive, consistent communities such as family and school.
Thank you to all students, staff and parents for being that community for each other this term. You are all amazing and together we achieve amazing things.
Have a wonderful holiday break and I look forward to seeing students returning happy and ready for some hard work in Term Two and I look forward to seeing parents and friends alongside the courts, and fields, and in the theatres.
Happy and Holy Easter.
